Native bush at the foot of Mt Pirongia

Mt Pirongia walks & things to do

The maunga rises straight up behind the cottage, so the walks genuinely start at the door. Here's how to make the most of Pirongia Forest Park, whatever your legs are up for.

All of this is within 10–15 minutes of the cottage.

Short bush loops

If you just want a stretch and some birdsong, the lower tracks off Grey Road and Corcoran Road give you native forest without a big commitment — an hour or two among the tawa and rimu, with tūī and kererū for company.

They're gentle enough for most and a lovely way to start or end a day.

The summit track

For the fit and well-prepared, the climb to Pirongia's summit (959m) is a proper full-day tramp, often muddy, with boardwalk sections near the top and huge views on a clear day. There's a hut near the summit if you want to make it an overnighter.

Take good boots, layers, water and more time than you think — this is a real mountain, not a stroll.

Around the maunga

Beyond the walks, Pirongia village (about 10 minutes) has a good café, the pub and the store, and the whole area is quiet backcountry Waikato — worth a slow drive with no particular destination.

Details can change with the seasons and the tides — check ahead before you set out.
