A day trip to the Waitomo Caves
The Waitomo glowworm caves are one of the North Island's great days out, and about an hour's easy drive south of the cottage. Here's how to plan it.
About an hour from the cottage, via Otorohanga.
The glowworm caves
The classic experience is the boat ride through the Glowworm Cave, drifting in the dark under a ceiling of thousands of glowworms. It's short, gentle and genuinely magic — good for all ages. Book ahead in summer and school holidays.
Black-water rafting
For something more active, black-water rafting takes you tubing along an underground river through the caves. There are gentler and more adventurous versions, so there's an option for most.
Make a day of the drive
Break the trip in Otorohanga — the Kiwi House is a great stop, especially with kids — and you've got an easy, full day out that lands you back at the cottage for dinner on the deck.
Details can change with the seasons and the tides — check ahead before you set out.
