Kawhia is a quiet west-coast harbour town about 50 minutes from the cottage, over the back of Pirongia. Its big draw is Ocean Beach, where — a couple of hours either side of low tide — you can dig your own hot pool in the black sand.
It's a proper off-the-beaten-track day, and the cottage is well placed for it: a scenic drive out to the coast, and a quiet green place to come back to, dog and all.
