about an hour from Cosy Country Cottage

The Waitomo glowworm caves are about an hour's drive south of the cottage, through Otorohanga and into the King Country limestone. It's one of the North Island's great days out — the glowworm grotto, black-water rafting, and the walks around the reserve.

Waitomo's own accommodation books out fast and runs to hotels and holiday parks. Staying at the cottage gives you a quieter, more private alternative an easy drive away, with the dog welcome and your own kitchen for the evening after a day underground.

What's around Waitomo

  • Glowworm caves

The famous boat ride under a ceiling of glowworms — book ahead in summer.

  • Black-water rafting

Tube through the caves on an underground river — the adventurous option.

  • Ruakuri walk

A free, beautiful bush-and-limestone loop if you'd rather stay above ground.

  • Otorohanga on the way

The Kiwi House is a great stop with kids, roughly halfway.

See Waitomo for the day and come back to space and quiet: a self-contained, dog-friendly cottage an hour north, with your own kitchen and deck.
